Getting started with mobility in Kerkrade
On April 26, the council adopted the municipality of Kerkrade's Mobility Plan, "Together on the road in a healthy and accessible Kerkrade. In this mobility plan, we have outlined the future image of how the municipality of Kerkrade will look in the future in terms of traffic and mobility.
"With the mobility plan we aim to make Kerkrade more accessible and more vital. We believe it is important that Kerkrade is accessible to everyone. That's why we are improving connections between districts, centers and business parks. We are also improving traffic safety. This will ensure a pleasant living environment for everyone," said Alderman Geers (Traffic and Transport).
How we will concretely start doing this next year will be defined in detail in the 2024 implementation plan. We briefly inform you in advance about the projects that will be implemented or investigated in 2024.
What projects are we implementing in 2024?
First, we are working to improve traffic safety. One of the ways we are doing this is by taking speed reduction measures. We are also creating additional parking spaces where possible in areas where it is too busy and we are participating in a new tender for charging stations.
All school zones are set up with the legal signage and marking. In addition, two new school zones are established each year with new attention-grabbing street furniture. This makes the school zones more recognizable. We also hold additional actions at schools to increase traffic awareness.
We are also making bus stops more accessible for people with mobility problems, expanding the VeloCity network and implementing measures to reduce transportation poverty in Kerkrade West.
Lastly, we are working to promote sustainable mobility, promote the IC connection between Randstad-Eindhoven-Aachen via Herzogenrath and adjust the gateway construction on several roads.
What projects are we still investigating?
First, we are exploring how to better accommodate bicycle traffic and where to place additional charging stations for electric bikes.
We are also studying how to influence traffic behavior and looking at the accessibility and road safety of the Rodaboulevard and the Locht, among others.
