City Council

The municipal government works much the same as our government. The city council can be compared to the House of Representatives and the college can be compared to the Cabinet.

The council acts on behalf of the people, sets policy frameworks and controls the mayor and aldermen. This can be compared to the House of Representatives at the national level. The college "governs," carries out the measures and is accountable afterwards. This is done on its own initiative - based on the legal obligation to provide information - or at the request of the council.

Once the council has set the broad outlines for policies, it is up to the college to determine how it will implement them.

Coalition agreement and college program

The coalition agreement is the basis for municipal policy. It is an agreement between the elected political parties. It states the course the municipality wants to take in the coming years. The college elaborates the ambitions from the coalition agreement into concrete objectives and actions and records them in the college program.

The motto for the 2022-2026 term of government is, "Continuing to build a vital and challenging Kerkrade together!
