Preserve Monastery Wing Pannesheide through new housing!

The wing of Monastery Pannesheide will be restored. This is the outcome of a course of action set out by the municipality. Initially, the wing was to be demolished. The municipality has now been able to prevent that. A party will buy the wing and renovate it. The intention is that once it has been repaired, it will be used as a temporary home.

Alderman Tim Weijers (Spatial Planning/Housing/Public Space) said, "We are pleased that it appears that it will still be possible to preserve the monastery wing and that, in addition, new housing that meets the need will be built here."

Call

At the request of the City Council, a nationwide call was made through monument trade journals. There appeared to be ample interest in a renovation of the monastery wing that would allow it to be preserved. Eventually a number of parties worked out and submitted a renovation plan. From these, the best plan was chosen by a committee. In assessing the plan, particular attention was paid to its appearance to - and integration into - the surroundings. The existing building will be renovated without extensions.

DIY homes

The developing party wants to renovate the monastery wing and turn it into handicraft housing. Self-builders or handymen can buy or rent a home in the renovated building and finish and furnish it as they see fit.A special approach to this is that people with a distance to the housing market, in particular, are given the opportunity to obtain their own home.

Approval council

A council proposal will be presented in January 2022 to provide a grant,
so that the renovation becomes feasible. Upon approval, implementation can then begin. The contract with the executing party will specify when the renovation and construction of park and parking facilities must be completed.

Furnishing public area and park

The new layout of the green space around the monastery wing will be carried out by the developing party. The Municipality of Kerkrade will bear Health the design of the adjacent public space.

Participation

Neighbors were already involved in the planning of a new park. Now that the demolition of the monastery wing is cancelled, a new design for the public space will be made. Here again, local residents will be involved.
