Tree Day 2022: a green new schoolyard for BS de Spoorzoeker
On Wednesday, November 16, the planting season for National Tree Day started. In Kerkrade, we celebrated during the opening of the new, green schoolyard of elementary school de Spoorzoeker on Thursday, Nov. 17.
The theme of this year's Tree Day was '(with) Trees Working!' Because planting (more) trees is an important social issue. After all, trees are indispensable for the climate.
As part of Boomfeestdag, the students at de Spoorzoeker Elementary School did their own important part in building their new schoolyard. Together, they planted trees and ornamental plants in and around the schoolyard. The children will also help maintain the plants and trees in the schoolyard.
Working (with) Trees
The green schoolyard has many benefits for the students of the Tracker, but also for the neighborhood.
"By helping to plant and maintain greenery, children learn a lot about trees and plants. For example, how they provide a healthy environment for people and animals. By giving the students their own responsibility for the trees and plants, they will also treat them with care," explained Alderman Jo Schlangen (Youth).
Alderman Alexander Geers (Public Space) adds: "Tree Day teaches us all how important it is to have enough greenery in our environment. Especially in the city, where there are many bricks and many houses. Less bricks and more trees and plants in the neighborhood make for a nicer and healthier environment to play in and to live in."
