Tree Day - more greenery for nature development zone Kaffebergsweg

Wednesday, March 20, 2024 was the conclusion of the 2023-2024 tree festival season. Of course we also celebrated this in Kerkrade. Students from group 7 of elementary school de Blokkenberg, together with residents and employees of the municipality, planted trees, hedges and shrubs in the nature development zone on Kaffebergsweg.

The work to further improve the area was an idea of Kaffebergs Road residents. They asked the municipality for help. We then decided by mutual agreement to take it up together. And also involve the children of Blokkenberg Elementary School. Because in the Boomfeestdag year theme 'Growing up with trees', the living environment of children is central. Children who grow up in green areas exercise more, suffer less from stress, breathe cleaner air, can concentrate better at school and have more social contacts.

Sweet chestnut

As many as 26 students from grade 7 helped with the planting work. Under a bright sun, all participants worked hard. They also shared knowledge about trees, shrubs, bees and other critters. Together with Alderman Alexander Geers (Public Space), they planted a sweet chestnut in the middle of the area.

Alderman Geers: "By helping to plant, the children learn how important trees and other greenery are for a nice living environment. And not just for us humans - this tree will soon provide a nice nesting place for birds and the sweet chestnuts are a food source for various animal species."

Alderman Geers plants a young chestnut tree with children. They scoop up the hole in which the tree was planted.
