Forest maintenance in Kerkrade
In the coming period, we will be working with Bosgroep Zuid-Nederland on a section of the forests in the outskirts. This work focuses on maintenance and tree safety and is important for protecting the safety and health of our green spaces.
Tree safety
A certified tree safety inspector checks trees that could pose a danger to the surrounding area due to the risk of falling or falling branches. Trees that pose a risk are marked and pruned, or removed if necessary. The so-called bles markings are a dot, cross, or stripe on the tree to indicate that maintenance is required. This is carefully considered.
Thinning
Thinning is also necessary. This involves removing selected trees to improve growing conditions for the remaining trees. It provides more light, water, and nutrients, resulting in stronger and healthier trees. It also helps to prevent overcrowded forests, which are more susceptible to diseases and pests. In this way, we ensure that the forests of Kerkrade remain resilient now and in the future, and that we can all enjoy the green environment. In addition, biodiversity is taken into account during these thinning operations; we aim for a varied, structured, and diverse forest where as many species as possible can find a home.
Because many of the forests in Kerkrade are the same age, we also emphasize forest rejuvenation. Rejuvenation is another important aspect of forest management. By planting young trees and promoting their growth, we ensure a good mix of young and older trees within our forests. This increases the resilience of our green spaces against disease and climate change, and ensures a sustainable ecosystem in the long term.
