The municipality registers you at the address where you usually sleep, even if it is not your own home. Do you temporarily not have a residential address and want to be able to receive mail? Then you can apply for a postal address. You will then receive your mail temporarily at the address of a friend, acquaintance or family member.

What is a letter address?

A postal address is a temporary solution for people who do not have a residential address for a while. There are various reasons for applying for a postal address. For example, because of a temporary stay abroad, staying in a nursing home or because of homelessness. As a letter address you choose the address of family or friends. Will you not receive permission from family or friends? Then in certain situations you may use the letter address of the municipality.
A letter address is an address to which you can have your mail sent. This allows you to receive important mail from the government and other organizations.
When applying for a postal address, the municipality always checks whether you do not have a residential address.

What is a residential address?

A residential address is the address where you live. Do you have more than one address? Then the residential address is the address where you sleep most often in six months. You can also live in a mobile home, caravan, on a recreation park or on a boat. This must have a permanent pitch or berth.

- You can only be registered at 1 address in the Netherlands. This is either a home address or a letter address.
- The address you give as a letter address is a home. The address cannot be a business or a PO Box number.
- A letter address is usually for a short period of time.
- The main occupant or owner of the address is registered at the letter address. This person must give permission when applying.
- Will you receive mail at the address of a friend, acquaintance or family member? If so, that person must make sure you actually receive your mail.
 

Types of letter address

A postal address is always an address in the Netherlands and may not be a postbus .

Letter address due to residence in a nursing home or institution

When residing in a nursing home, prison, social shelter or other designated institution, a letter address may be chosen. The application can be made in writing. Permission is always needed from the letter-address provider (that's the person who receives mail for you).

Letter address at private individual with a residential address

You have no residential address and choose a letter address with a relative or acquaintance. This person, the letter address provider, gives you written permission and agrees to receive your writings.

Letter address at the municipality

You choose a letter address with a letter-address provider. For example, with friends or family. Will you not get permission from family or friends for a letter address? Under certain Requirements , a letter address with the municipality is then possible.

- You have no residential address
- You reside in Kerkrade or have been a long-term resident of Kerkrade in the recent past
- You are attending or will attend a (municipal) assistance program
- You pick up your mail at least once every 2 weeks

When can I pick up my mail?

You should pick up your mail at the address Markt 33, 6461 EC Kerkrade. You can do this from Monday to Friday during opening hours of the City Office.

When picking up the mail, bring a valid ID. Otherwise, you will not receive the mail.

What mail is the congregation not accepting?

- Parcels
- Non-government mail
- Medicine and/or medical devices
- Registered mail

Letter address and benefits or debts

Does someone have a letter address at your address? You are not responsible for this person's debts. This person is also not registered as a resident at the address. Because of this, there are temporarily no consequences for any benefit(s), rent allowance or health care allowance.
 

What to do.

Always contact us if you wish to apply for a letter address. There will first be a telephone screening where an initial assessment will be made as to whether you may qualify for a letter address. If this shows that you do not have a residential address, you will receive declaration forms to submit the application. After you have completed and returned the declaration forms, this declaration will be assessed. A personal appointment may follow, if your situation is not clear and/or if you have questions for assistance.
