Camera surveillance in Heilustpark Kerkrade
Starting August 23, there will be camera surveillance in the Heilustpark in Kerkrade. It concerns the area surrounded by Anemonenstraat, Aster, Geraniumstraat, Gladiolenstraat, Kampstraat, Lavender, Lupinestraat, Lupinehof and Papaverplein. This was decided by deputy mayor Tim Weijers.
Reason
Heilust Park, also known as Park West, has been the site of incidents of public disorder and serious nuisance for quite some time. These include acts of violence, intimidation, reckless driving, setting off fireworks, and vandalism, mainly caused by young people. This situation creates a sense of unrest and insecurity in the nearby neighborhood. In addition to the extra efforts of enforcement and police, camera surveillance is considered a necessary measure to address the nuisance. The decision to introduce camera surveillance was made in close consultation with both the police and the public prosecutor's office.
Role of camera surveillance
Camera placement makes it possible for police and enforcement to closely monitor the area. The surveillance also has a preventive effect. The camera allows the agencies involved to respond quickly to ongoing incidents and also provides the ability to analyze events afterwards. "The purpose of the camera surveillance is to improve safety and ensure that everyone can enjoy the park," said Deputy Mayor Weijers.
Six months
The camera surveillance will last for six months. After three months, an evaluation will be held between the police, the prosecutor's office and the municipality to determine if camera surveillance is still necessary.
Privacy
The use of camera surveillance is strictly regulated by privacy laws and its establishment is a power of the mayor. The camera will only capture the public space, with no insight into private homes, gardens or business premises. The police will manage the recorded images and unnecessary images will be deleted.
Residents can contact the enforcement department of the municipality of Kerkrade for questions or to report a nuisance by calling 045-5676348 or emailing handhaving@kerkrade.nl.
If criminal acts are observed or suspected, the police should be called at 0900-8844 or in case of emergency: 112.
