Family festival At Home in West! to close project West gains space
On Friday, July 22, Park West hosted the family festival At Home in West! took place.
During this festival, the final result of the West Gains Space project was celebrated together with the residents of Kerkrade West.
West gains space
In 2011, the municipality of Kerkrade started this project together with project partners HEEMwonen, Stadsregio Parkstad Limburg and the province of Limburg. The aim was to improve life, living and working in Kerkrade West. A lot has happened in recent years: houses have been demolished, Park West and 't Westhoes have come, new houses have been built and existing houses have been made ready for the future. A lot of new green space has also been added.
Important contribution residents
The residents of West played an important part in these developments. Without them, the project would not have been such a success. The end result is quite something!
Alderman Tim Weijers (Housing / Spatial Planning): "Ten years ago, Kerkrade-West was a very different type of neighborhood and there was quite a task. Together with the project partners and residents, we put our shoulders to the wheel to improve the area. I think we can be incredibly proud of what we have achieved here together!"
District Councilman John Roland adds, "We have all pushed boundaries here, in this border region. Together with the residents, we have made it a district where people feel at home and where they can build on their future. But this does not make the district 'finished' yet: this is only the beginning of a new period for Kerkrade-West!"
A lasting memento
All this was celebrated with a variety of activities for young and old, including craft workshops for children and performances by various artists. Children from the neighborhood were able to put their handprints in concrete. The plate with the handprints will get a nice place in the neighborhood as a permanent memento of the space West won.
