No more away spectators at matches between Roda JC and MVV

The mayors of Kerkrade and Maastricht, in consultation with the police, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Roda JC and MVV soccer clubs, have decided not to allow away supporters at matches between the two clubs for the next three soccer seasons. The measure also applies to the next derby scheduled for March 17, 2024. This follows the incidents of violence during Roda JC-MVV two weeks ago and the history at mutual matches between the clubs in recent years.

Limit reached

Both mayors indicate that a limit has been reached. "Despite all measures and mutual agreements, we have seen a group of rioters causing disturbances. So unfortunately we have no choice but to take this measure. Very sour, because for the real experience in a sporting derby also includes away crowd, " responds Mayor Petra Dassen of Kerkrade. Both soccer clubs are closely involved in the creation of the decision and support the course of the triangle. The KNVB has also expressed its understanding for the need to take this measure.

Large-scale police deployment

Mayor of Maastricht Wim Hillenaar adds that the large-scale deployment of police is disproportionate: "The police manpower necessary to keep these soccer matches on track is out of all proportion. And despite this, vandalism is still being carried out in and outside the stadiums. This is no longer justifiable. To prevent this, this measure to play without away crowds for the next few years is the only solution."
