Municipality of Kerkrade signs covenant for responsible natural stone production
Gemeente Kerkrade signed the covenant for responsible natural stone production yesterday. The covenant, called "Initiative TruStone," is a joint effort by the Dutch and Flemish natural stone sectors, governments, organizations and unions to address abuses in the natural stone industry.
Alderman René van Drunen (sustainability) emphasizes the importance of this step: "Sustainability is essential for our municipality. By signing this covenant, we contribute to a fair and sustainable supply chain for natural stone. In addition, by doing so we are actively contributing to combating poor working conditions and child labor. We strive not only to deliver good quality, but also to act ethically in every project we undertake. This is how we work together on 't Kirchroa va Mörje."
The covenant asks municipalities to include Requirements regarding natural stone in their tenders or contracts with contractors. In this way, Kerkrade is working towards a better world for people and the environment.
