Kerkrade municipality tackles oak processionary caterpillar nuisance
The oak processionary caterpillar doesn't care much for the corona crisis. In the coming months, the hairy caterpillar can again be found in oak trees. The burning hairs of the caterpillar cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. The municipality is therefore taking measures to prevent the nuisance as much as possible.
Many of these oaks are along roads, bike paths and near homes. In April and May, the oak processionary caterpillar control is focusing on the areas where residents are most at risk; busy bike and foot paths, around schools, daycare centers, nursing homes and public buildings.
To reduce the nuisance, the oak processionary caterpillar is controlled preventively. At the stage before the development of the fire hairs. Control is done by spraying with a biological agent that fights only the caterpillar and is completely harmless to animals and humans.
Residents who nevertheless experience nuisance from the oak processionary caterpillar can report this to the municipality of Kerkrade. In June and July, a specialized company will vacuum out the nests in places where reports have been made.
