Municipality of Kerkrade starts payment of energy surcharge
Energy bills will go up for many households. Not everyone will be able to pay this bill. Therefore, people with a low income can receive a one-time supplement of 800 euros. The municipal council of Kerkrade has decided to start paying the energy surcharge now rather than wait for the national change in the law.
One-time energy surcharge of 800 euros
The energy surcharge is one-time and intended only for the year 2022. The surcharge is intended to help low-income households pay for increased energy prices.

- In addition, there is no asset test.
- The amount of the supplement is 800 euros per household.
- Persons admitted to debt relief are also eligible regardless of income.
- Youth ages 18 to 20 who receive additional special assistance are also eligible under Requirements .
Energy supplement is paid automatically
If you are already known to the municipality of Kerkrade, you will be paid the energy supplement automatically.
This can be as:
- You receive a Social assistance benefit or IOAW,
- You receive special assistance or use the Social Cultural Activities scheme,
- you receive a municipal contribution to the cost of group health insurance,
- You are an entrepreneur with a Bbz benefit or IOAZ,
- you receive Supplemental Income Support for the Elderly through the Social Insurance Bank.
This automatic disbursement will take place in April 2022.
Note: The €800 will be paid to people who received assistance or a payment from the SCA, IIT or special assistance for the period from January 1, 2022 to April 1, 2022. This means that people who apply for or receive payment(s) after April 1, 2022, must submit the application themselves. Please use the application form
Not known to municipality? Then apply for energy allowance
If you are not eligible for an automatic payout, you can apply for it. Low-income households who are not known to the municipality can apply for the energy supplement. You can do this if, for example:
- (Part-time) works, but earns little,
- Receiving benefits from the UWV,
- An AOW benefit with a small pension or,
- Are self-employed with a low income.
Unfortunately, if you live in an institution, and also do not pay energy costs, you do not qualify for the energy allowance.
