Kerkrade municipality extends shopping hours on Sundays and holidays

On Nov. 7, a new shopping hours ordinance will go into effect in Kerkrade. This change means that stores will be allowed to be open longer on Sundays and holidays than before.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Longer opening hours: Stores are now allowed to be open on Sundays and holidays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., instead of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • More holidays: Stores may also be open on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday and Whit Monday.

  • Stores near Roda JC Kerkrade: The ban on stores on the Rodaboulevard from being open on Sundays and public holidays when Roda JC Kerkrade plays at the Parkstad Limburg Stadium has been lifted.

  • Flexibility for municipality: Instead of the general obligation to close during Roda JC Kerkrade matches, the municipality can now occasionally set different opening hours. This allows the municipality to set restrictions on opening hours when necessary.

The purpose of these new rules is to create a healthier environment for retailers while being mindful of the people who live nearby. The most important thing to remember is that retailers are not required to open longer. The choice to take advantage of these new options is entirely in the hands of retailers.
