Municipality deploys camera surveillance
The municipality of Kerkrade is improving its approach to nuisance by deploying cameras. In doing so, it is also working to improve the sense of security of residents, business owners and visitors to the municipality. To this end, from the weekend of July 16/17, 2022, the municipality will start camera surveillance in two areas step by step. These are part of the Centrum neighborhood and the D'r Prick location in the Nulland neighborhood. For the time being, the camera surveillance applies for the duration of one year.

The (temporary) deployment of camera surveillance is a power of the mayor and may only be applied under strict Requirements . The idea behind camera surveillance is primarily prevention. The knowledge that camera surveillance is being used can deter people from disrupting public order in public spaces. Another important objective is to promote feelings of safety among users of public spaces.
By establishing camera surveillance in the areas to be designated, the municipality aims to, among other things:
- Reduce vandalism, theft, drug and violent crimes
- Reduce loitering problems
- Reducing nuisance
- Being able to respond more quickly to incidents
- Ensuring order and safety at events and demonstrations (crowd control).
Livability
The municipality of Kerkrade places a high priority on the issue of livability. Despite all the efforts of the bodies responsible for public order and safety, the two areas mentioned are still known as "hot spots" because of the nature and scale of the problems. It is expected that camera surveillance - supplementary to the other efforts already being made in the areas in question - will make the most substantial contribution to maintaining public order and safety. Cameras help the police and BOAs to do their work better on the street and tackle nuisances faster.
Starting Friday, July 15, camera surveillance in the designated areas can begin.
