Kerkrade City Council recommends reappointment of mayor Petra Dassen-Housen
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024, the Kerkrade City Council decided to recommend Mayor Petra Dassen Housen for reappointment. She has been mayor of Kerkrade since June 11, 2019, and is now in her final year of her first six-year term.
Accurate procedure
From the City Council, a committee on confidence was formed to prepare for the reappointment. That committee has been working on it over the past few months and has made a reasoned recommendation to the City Council. During a closed session on Dec. 11, the council discussed the recommendation. Later that evening, the deputy chairman of the city council, Leo Jongen, announced the result in the public meeting.

Leo Jongen praised Mayor Petra Dassen-Housen: "Our mayor is the face of Kerkrade, a true citizen mother. She takes responsibility in the interests of the Kerkrade community, she is visible and accessible and shows commitment to Kerkrade's residents. She is always approachable. She has also demonstrated that she performs the duties associated with the mayor's office very well."
Mayor Petra Dassen-Housen thanked the City Council for the trust placed in her, "The trust placed in me touches me deeply. I feel strongly connected to Kerkrade and its residents and am happy to continue my work with love, dedication and passion."
Royal decree
After the recommendation is made, it is submitted to the commissioner of the King, Emile Roemer, and the Minister of the Interior. The king then ratifies the reappointment by signing a royal decree. Before June 11, 2025, Mayor Petra Dassen-Housen takes the oath of office with the commissioner of the King. Then the reappointment is official.
