Free information session on elder abuse

One in 20 elderly people experience abuse. This can take many different forms.

This can include physical violence, as well as financial abuse or neglect. Usually the perpetrators are acquaintances on whom the elderly depend. Elderly people whose physical or mental health makes them dependent on assistance are therefore most at risk. This applies both to the elderly living independently and those in care facilities.

The term "elder abuse" often sounds too harsh in certain cases. Regularly being short with an elderly person who asks for attention, or buying something for yourself once when shopping for groceries is certainly not excusable, but in many eyes it will not be abuse. Since no other term is available, it is called elder abuse. It can therefore include both very severe and very mild forms.
