Cross-border Wine Street

In a unique collaboration, Flanders and the Netherlands are joining forces to develop and connect sustainable wine tourism across four wine regions:

  • Hageland
  • Haspengouw
  • the Belgian-Dutch Meuse Valley
  • Mergelland,South Limburg

That connecting is done through a study on regional wine identity, product development of a wine route, wine experience and an innovative & sustainable wine ecosystem.

Partners Hogeschool PXL, Toerisme Vlaanderen, Toerisme Vlaams-Brabant vzw, Visit Zuid-Limburg, KU Leuven, Herita, Bisschoppelijk Centrum Rolduc, Gemeente Kerkrade, Stad Borgloon, Visit Limburg and Wijngoed Raar Saint Remi are working together for 3 years to make this happen.

Interreg project

The project is co-financed by Interreg VI Flanders-Netherlands, the cooperation program with financial support from the European Regional Development Fund. With the launch of the wine street, the consortium hopes not only to attract wine lovers, but also to inspire a wide audience to enjoy a sustainable and meaningful tourist (wine) experience.

Connection

The goal? To connect an emerging wine region - growing number of winemakers as well as quality wines with a unique geological stack of ironstone, marl, gravel and loess within a short distance of 80 km and a shared cultural-historical wine history - into a unique, cross-border tourist story. A wine street in which the wine experience is central with synergies to other sectors such as local cuisine, cultural heritage, landscape experiences and other tourist experiences that lend themselves perfectly to further tourism expansion.

Approach

Using a wine ecosystem to find and build sustainable connections. With as a tangible effect a physical wine route that visitors can travel on foot, by bicycle and/or in stages across 3 provinces: Flemish-Brabant, Flemish-Limburg and Dutch-Limburg.

Six wine hubs, or heritage sites with a clear wine historical past, will be the gateways for this wine route:
