Commemoration of Miners' Strike 1943 on April 29
One of the greatest Dutch acts of resistance during World War II was the South Limburg Miners' Strike of 1943. Together with the Twente Textile Strike in Twente and the Milk Strike, this wave of resistance against dictatorship and inhumanity is called the April May Strike. On Saturday, April 29, we will commemorate this event, which is 80 years ago this year.
Program
- At 10 a.m., a short ceremony will take place at the grave of the executed miner Servaas Toussaint at the cemetery in Hoensbroek. A procession of historic vehicles will then travel through Heerlen, Kerkrade and Landgraaf past places that recall the Miners' Strike.
- At 2 p.m. is the official commemoration at My Lunch Café at Relim, next to the Miners' Memorial Chapel, Casinolaan 6 in Landgraaf.
From the various regions involved, also as a learning experience for the present, national attention is called for this great act of resistance in a dignified manner. BNNVARA will soon broadcast the documentary "Staken op leven en dood " .
