The new and improved Old Hickory Square is ready
We have been working hard on Old Hickory Square for the past three months. New pavers, new lanterns and new trees and shrubs have been installed. Since Saturday, March 11, the new square has been open again.
The work is now almost finished and the result is great! More greenery will be planted in the coming period. This was not possible this week because of the weather.
Municipality and local residents looked together at addressing the square
The main reason for addressing Old Hickory Square was to make it a safer and more pleasant environment. This was a wish of the people who live on the square. Together with them, we therefore looked at how we could rearrange the square to make this happen.
More comfortable, safer and greener
In addition to being more pleasant and safer, we wanted to make Old Hickory Square greener right away. We included this in the plans. We drew examples of how the square could become. We used these to coordinate details with local residents, such as the type of trees that would be there.
The square now looks very different
The square has been completely changed: there are new pavers and trees around the square. We also replaced all the streetlights. Footpaths run around the square. One thing has not changed: there are still the same number of parking spaces.
Alderman Alexander Geers (Public Space) is pleased with the new square: "This is the result of a long period of preparation by the municipality and local residents. The square has now received a huge refresh. The new design provides more social safety. It also provides a greening of the neighborhood."
You can park for free in the square again
Now that Old Hickory Square is open again, everyone can park here for free again. Therefore, you can no longer park for free along Station Street and Caspar Sprokel Street.
