High-rise Voorterstraat apartment building reaches its highest point within project SUPERLOCAL

On Thursday, May 27, housing corporation HEEMwonen, together with contractor JONGEN Bouwpartners, IBA Parkstad and the municipality of Kerkrade, celebrated reaching the highest point of the high-rise apartment building on Voorterstraat in Kerkrade.

The high-rise apartment building is part of the SUPERLOCAL project: a special project centered on reuse. Not just reuse of materials, but 'reusing' the way people in the area lived together, the atmosphere, the sense of community.

In the project area, 15 ground-level homes have already been built from reused materials. One half of the high-rise apartment building has been demolished and rebuilt, while the shell ( the 'skeleton') of the other half has been reused. With the 'renovation' of this flat, the last and most visible part will be added to the project.

Alderman Tim Weijers (Spatial Planning/Housing/Public Space) said, "This is an important milestone in the SUPERLOCAL project that we and all partners can be proud of. Slowly but surely the result of all joint efforts is becoming more and more visible."

Appropriate gift

To celebrate this special moment and as a thank you for the cooperation, Jordi Schoffelen (Manager Innovation & Markt - JONGEN Bouwpartners) presented an appropriate gift to Liesbeth van Beek (Director HEEMwonen): a piece of furniture for the new residents of the project area, made from reclaimed wood from the project area. This chair will later serve within the "Social plinth" (common area) of the SUPERLOCAL area.

Rating

This construction phase could never have been achieved without the dedication of the project team and in particular the construction site workers. As a token of thanks for their dedication - especially in unusual circumstances due to corona - they were addressed on the galleries of the apartment and then treated to a delicious snack.

Social services for and by residents

There will soon be 114 apartments in the flat. In the plinth of the building, facing the park, there will be a community center with social facilities for and by residents. The facilities that will be there will be determined and filled in together with local residents and future residents of the area. Meeting and coming together' is the central theme here. The space will at least include a laundry room. Residents can do their laundry here for a limited fee without having to buy their own washing machine.

The project will be substantially complete by 2022.

In the SUPERLOCAL project, as many materials as possible from former high-rise apartment buildings will be used to build new housing and construct public space. There will be 129 new affordable rental homes, a common space for residents and neighbors, and a water cycle that collects and purifies rainwater. SUPERLOCAL is a circular building project centered on sustainability and resident participation. Project partners are: HEEMwonen, Municipality of Kerkrade, IBA Parkstad, Dusseldorp Sloop Infra en Milieutechniek, Jongen Bouwpartners, Stadsregio Parkstad Limburg, WML, WBL, Zuyd Hogeschool, Veras, Municipality of Landgraaf and Municipality of Brunssum.
