The Municipality of Kerkrade has completed work on the realization of the recreational connection through the Holzkuil area. This connection was realized as the IBA project 2.9 "Ikgroenhet - restoration and construction of recreational walking and cycling connections."

The project was funded by the municipality of Kerkrade and a grant from IBA-Parkstad.

The goal of this project was to connect the Anstel Valley (including the Leisure Lane) with the recreational route along the Worm on German territory. In addition, the Carisborg area is better linked to the surrounding neighborhoods including the "On the Woods" area. This connection will create its own network of routes of different grades in the Holzkuil and Carisborg area. 

Holzkuil and Carisborg are now physically connected to Gravenrode Park in an uninterrupted system of bicycle/walking paths. This will encourage use, which will positively affect overall livability.

It is also about making the special cultural-historical, archaeological and scenic values of the Holzkuil area more accessible and experienceable, which will strengthen the new experiential, utilitarian and future value of the area. The first step has been taken here by amending the zoning plan.

This connection is a great addition to the existing network of recreational walking and biking connections in our community.
