Cable tray tile trial

How do you charge an electric car at home if you don't have your own driveway? A cable duct from your home to a public parking space in front of your door may be a solution. We are starting a trial to see how this works in practice.

As more and more people switch to an electric car, we are also getting more and more requests from residents without their own driveway who would like an option to charge their car at home. For example, with power from their own solar panels.

Cable tray tiles

Cable channel tiles could provide a solution here. These are special concrete tiles containing a gutter covered by a rubber flap. These tiles appear in the sidewalk between the home and a public parking lot. They allow electric car charging cables to be safely and neatly concealed.

To see if cable channel tiles are a good solution to make charging electric cars easier and safer, we are going to try out these cable channel tiles on a trial basis at 15 locations. After six months, we will see if we can expand this number. After a year, we will assess whether cable tray tiles will be given a permanent place within the options for electric charging in Kerkrade.

In the first round, we have 5 spots available per district (North, East, West). We distribute these in order of application.

  2. You have a charging station on your own property;
  3. You have no private driveway and park in public spaces;
  4. There is only a sidewalk between the public parking lot and your home or yard. So not also grass or green strip, road or bike path. The sidewalk between your home and the public parking lot must be no more than 2.10 meters wide;
  5. The existing sidewalk must be paved (e.g., pavers or clinkers);
  6. The sidewalk in which the cable tray is laid is directly adjacent to a public parking lot (or roadway), where parking is permitted;
  7. As a participant in the trial, you will actively participate in the evaluation by Kerkrade Municipality;
  8. In the case of a positive evaluation, if the applicant is also positive, he/she will refund the cost of the cable trench tile to the municipality. In the event of a negative evaluation, the cable tray tile will be removed by the municipality. There is no charge for this;
  9. Allocation will take place in the order in which applications are received, with a total of up to 15 cable tiling locations, with a maximum of 5 locations per district.

Rules of play for participation in the trial

  1. The parking location (parking lot or roadway) where the car is charging must be adjacent to the cable tray tile, remains part of the public space and is therefore accessible to everyone. Therefore, the applicant for the cable tray tile cannot appropriate, claim or occupy this parking location;
  2. The charging cable must lie entirely in the cable tray during charging. The charging cable may be longer than the cable tray. If so, part of the cable must be on your own property or under the car;
  3. When using the cable tray, you are required to use an approved power cable (designed specifically for charging electric or hybrid vehicles).
  4. You are responsible for keeping the tray in the cable tray tile clean;
  5. You must remove the charging cable immediately after use and store it on your own property or in your own vehicle;
  6. The neighborhood will be informed by letter that a cable trench tile will be laid; the letter will also explain where to go with complaints;
  7. If you do not comply with the terms of use, the municipality is entitled to remove the tile;
  8. If you are moving, you must notify the municipality. Transfer of the tiles to the new residents is possible, if they also agree and meet the Requirements;
  9. The municipality has the right to change the Requirements in the interim, if interim evaluation shows that it is deemed necessary.
