Laying cables and pipes in public land

What is it?

You may only lay cables and pipes in the ground in public areas. You must first report this to the Land Registry.

If you want to place cables and pipes above ground, you need an environmental permit.

What to do.

You make your notification to the Land Registry. When doing so, please provide the following information:

  • a description of the work
  • a schedule of all work
  • the planned start date and duration of the work
  • the type of cable or pipe to be laid
  • The number of cables or pipes to be laid
  • data where the cable or pipeline will be laid (route)

In certain situations, reporting is not enough:

  • If you are placing new hazardous materials pipelines on a new route, ask that the environmental plan be amended.
  • If you are placing new hazardous materials pipelines on an existing route, apply for an environmental permit.
  • If you place cables or pipes above ground, you need an environmental permit. You can apply for this through the Environment Desk.

More information can be found at the Cables and Pipelines Information Center(KLIC). KLIC is part of the Land Registry.
