Young heroes Sam and Jennifer from Kerkrade receive JONK award
On Thursday evening, November 27, the JONK awards were presented, the annual municipal award for young heroes between the ages of 6 and 21. This year, the awards went to Sam Senden (12) and Jennifer op den Kamp (11), who received the award from Alderman van Drunen (Youth Policy).
With the JONK award, we express our appreciation for children and young people who volunteer in a special way for others or for the city. The nominees were surprised at their homes and celebrated with an award and a certificate. Family, friends, and nominators were present to celebrate this special moment.
This year's recipients
Sam received the JONK award for his selfless care and sense of responsibility. He not only supports his family, but also actively contributes to his neighborhood and community. Whether helping the elderly, neighbors, or other family members, Sam shows how young people can have a positive impact on their community.
Jennifer was rewarded for her exceptional alertness and courage. During a fire, she was the first to raise the alarm. With her courage and commitment, she shows how young people can contribute to a safe and caring society and how important it is to look out for each other.Alderman
Alderman Drunen: "I am incredibly proud of these two heroes. Their efforts have significant social significance for our city. They make Kerkrade a better place and deserve to be recognized. They have certainly earned the JONK award!"
The JONK award is the successor to the youth ribbon that has been awarded since 2011. The new name symbolizes a fresh, contemporary appreciation for young residents who are wholeheartedly committed to their community. The nomination period for 2025 has now closed. In 2026, residents will once again have the opportunity to nominate young heroes for this special award.
