Kerkrade looks at options for extra helping hand for flood victims

The municipal council of Kerkrade is going to look into the possibilities of providing additional assistance to those affected by flooding. These include the residents affected by the recent flood disaster, but also, without question, the residents of Eygelshoven who were caught off guard in late June by a cloudburst resulting in heavy flooding.

"Although the general picture is that Kerkrade got off relatively well compared to other South Limburg municipalities during the flood disaster, the impact for Kerkrade residents who were affected is really no less personally," said Deputy Mayor Tim Weijers. The municipality of Kerkrade is therefore going to look at how they can lend a helping hand to those affected.

Extra empties RD4

Immediately after the flooding in Eygelshoven (late June) and the flooding disaster throughout Limburg (mid-July), the municipality made arrangements with RD4 for extra emptying of waste containers so that affected households could clean up the mess created as a result of the flooding. Alderman Dion Schneider (Waste): "While this was no doubt a nice gesture by RD4, for many of our residents it only felt like a partial solution. After all, the extra empties are at the expense of the residents themselves. So then one has not only material damage, but also extra costs to clean up all the garbage. We understand very well that you feel a bit left out in the cold. The municipality of Kerkrade is therefore currently examining whether there are possibilities to accommodate residents in this."

National Disaster Fund: €1000 for severely affected households

The National Disaster Fund (Giro 777) indicated on July 23 that they will provide €1000 to the severely affected households in Limburg. Gemeente Kerkrade, like other Limburg municipalities, is in talks with the Disaster Fund about what the Requirements are and how this relief will be provided.

Residents can contact the municipality with their questions

The municipality considers it important that residents have somewhere to turn with their questions. If residents have questions, they can therefore contact the municipality by telephone at 14 045. Municipal employees can then answer the questions or refer the residents to the appropriate national information (lines).

"In a situation like this, as a resident you definitely don't want to be sent from pillar to post. Therefore, as a municipality we keep an eye on all national developments and make sure that we can speak to our residents personally and thus inform them as well as possible," said Alderman Bert Bejas (Services).

Kerkrade also offers help to Mayschoß

An appeal for financial help for the hard-hit German town of Mayschoß was received through Eurode. Mayschoß is historically closely linked to Eurode, and this link is honored to this day. The town is in urgent need of reconstruction assistance. Eurode has answered the call and has already transferred a donation. Herzogenrath has also opened an account for donations. A donation can be transferred to account number DE29 3916 2980 1017 1970 25 (BIC: GENODED1WUR) stating " Nothilfe Mayschoß".
