Kerkrade and Herzogenrath join hands for cross-border bike path
On Wednesday, Nov. 27, the mayors of Kerkrade, Petra Dassen and Herzogenrath, Benjamin Fadavian, together with the aldermen, Alexander Geers and Franz Josef Türck-Hövener, signed a letter of intent seeking a direct bicycle connection between Herzogenrath station and Kerkrade-Centrum.
New bicycle connection
The municipalities of Kerkrade and Herzogenrath are making a joint effort to eliminate land borders by improving sustainable mobility and promoting public transport. This initiative is part of a broader cooperation aimed at improving bicycle and transport links between the two municipalities.
In this cooperation, residents and visitors can already use Velocity's shared bike stations, located in the center of Kerkrade and at the intercity station in Herzogenrath. These electric share bikes make it possible to travel quickly and easily between the station in Herzogenrath and the center of Kerkrade, and vice versa.
Letter of Intent
With the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI), cooperation in the field of mobility and traffic will be further shaped. The joint goal includes improving bicycle connections between the two municipalities. Work is currently underway on an improved bicycle connection between the intercity train station in Herzogenrath and the center of Kerkrade. A route study has already been carried out for this purpose and further development will be taken up in the near future.
Mayor Petra Dassen and Alderman Alexander Geers of the Municipality of Kerkrade: "This project shows how important cross-border cooperation is and can contribute to a sustainable and accessible future for our residents. By joining forces, we make the region stronger and connect even better."
