Kerkrade and Herzogenrath explore new cross-border bike route
On March 12, the joint route exploration of the new bicycle connection between Kerkrade and Herzogenrath took place. In attendance were aldermen Raoul Vinken of Kerkrade municipality, and Franz Josef Türck-Hövener of Stadt Herzogenrath.
From the train station in Herzogenrath, they collectively cycled a large part of the planned route for the bicycle connection towards Kerkrade. During the bike ride, they were told more about the route study conducted and the plans for constructing the entire bicycle route.
Alderman Raoul Vinken (Mobility) also stressed the importance of the connection during the meeting: "This is not only a step forward in our infrastructure, but also a powerful symbol of progress, sustainability and cooperation between the municipality of Kerkrade and Stadt Herzogenrath."
On November 27, 2024 mayors Kerkrade, Petra Dassen and Herzogenrath, Benjamin Fadavian together with aldermen Alexander Geers and Franz Josef Türck-Hövener signed a Letter of Intent. The signing of this agreement gave concrete expression to cooperation in the field of mobility.
The bicycle route connects the town centers. Herzogenrath station fulfills an important role in Kerkrade's commuter traffic as an intercity station towards Aachen. The connection also provides opportunities for tourism and recreation. Both residents and visitors can explore the region in a sustainable and enjoyable way.
Practical arrangements for the entire route will be examined in the short term.
