Kerkrade invests course with confidence into 2026
The College of Mayor and Aldermen presents the last multi-year budget of the 2022-2026 administration period. Under the motto "Continuing to build together for a vital and challenging Kerkrade!", the college chooses to continue to invest in a strong, safe and future-proof town in 2026.
Steady course: investing and reserving
Even in 2026, Kerkrade will continue to invest. An incidental €5 million will be set aside in a development fund. When deploying this fund, the college is thinking of, for example: the housing of associations, the development of an Urban sports park and the strengthening of the pop podium at the Flexiforum especially for young people, tackling problematic real estate (introduction Rotterdam Act), urban development, security and the resilience program. At the same time, the college remains mindful of the future financial situation of the municipality: indeed, for the years 2028 and 2029, the outlook is uncertain. Therefore, €1.45 million will be set aside to cover future deficits.
Financial stability and preparing for the future
Kerkrade continues to face financial challenges and will receive less money from the state (known as the Ravine Year) starting in 2028. Nevertheless, the college, together with the town council and local partners, is unabatedly committed to a strong, livable and future-oriented town.
"With thoughtful choices, targeted investments and close cooperation, Kerkrade continues to develop into a vital, safe and attractive municipality for all its residents" said a satisfied Alderman Finance, Jo Paas.
What does the budget mean for residents
The College proposal now presented to the City Council does not involve any additional burden on our residents. In fact, we made targeted choices together with the City Council during the preparation of this budget, which allowed us to avoid a further increase in the burden on our residents, on top of earlier council decisions.
Building further together
The College, together with the Town Council, residents, businesses and institutions, continues to work on a strong and future-oriented town. By making smart choices and targeted investments, Kerkrade will remain a place where people enjoy living, working and coming together.
The Kerkrade City Council will consider the 2026 budget at the council meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
