Kerkrade can build faster in center due to €7.5 million Rijk contribution

The municipality of Kerkrade is receiving a €7.5 million contribution from the state to improve traffic safety and accessibility in the center of Kerkrade. For Kerkrade, the subsidy means that several sites for housing development in the center can be developed more quickly. In Limburg, Kerkrade is the only municipality that is already guaranteed a subsidy in the first round.

Alderman Tim Weijers (Housing/Residential Planning): "It is good to see that thanks to good cooperation with both the City Region of Parkstad Limburg and the Province of Limburg, we have managed to secure this grant. Our ambitions to meet local housing needs are recognized. The accelerated realization of housing in the center is in line with these ambitions. It is the start of our housing offensive."

"This substantial contribution will allow us to address some traffic issues in an accelerated manner that will improve accessibility and road safety," said Alderman Alexander Geers (Traffic and Transportation).

The Netherlands is struggling with far too little housing. This is why every effort is being made to get developers, municipalities, corporations, etc. to build new housing (or have new housing built). The subsidy Kerkrade now receives comes from the Mobility Fund of the State.

Sites for housing development

For housing sites, these include the Atrium apartment building on Niersprinkstraat, the vacant lot on Marktstraat-Einderstraat and the D'r Pool site on Putgang.

Traffic points

Traffic points to and from the center that will be addressed include the Hamstraat - Voorterstraat traffic circle, the Domaniale Mijnstraat - Kruisstraat intersection and the Roderlandbaan - St. Pieterstraat flyover. Bicycle connections to and from neighboring Herzogenrath will be improved.
