Kerkrade sets up shelter for Ukrainian refugees

In Kerkrade, a site on Hammolenweg/Hambosweg has been designated immediately as a reception location for Ukrainian refugees. Ukrainian refugees without a residence address will be temporarily housed here before being transferred to more structural housing. The shelter will open at the end of 2023 and remain in use for a maximum of 2 years.

Since 2022, hundreds of refugees have already been temporarily housed in various locations in Kerkrade. There is still a need for additional reception sites in the region. The Cabinet and the Safety Region Limburg South have made an urgent request to municipalities to accommodate Ukrainian refugees. As a result, the site on Hammolenweg (on the corner with Hambosweg) has been designated as a new shelter for about 200 Ukrainian refugees.

The shelter serves as a temporary shelter for Ukrainian refugees without a residence address. They will stay here while waiting for a place for a longer period of time. Exactly what the shelter will look like is not yet known. The municipality of Kerkrade will now work with the South Limburg Safety Region to further develop the plan for reception in Kerkrade. The location will be put into use within a few weeks. By doing so, Kerkrade is making a substantial contribution to the reception and has received a commitment from the South Limburg Safety Region that no new requests will follow.

Reception of refugees in Kerkrade
Alderman John Roland on the reception: "Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine has not yet come to an end. Besides the still existing structural housing of refugees in Kerkrade, we now once again take our responsibility in the reception. We previously did so in Rolduc Sports Hall for several months. Of course, just like then, we are continuously ensuring the safety of all local residents. Other municipalities in the Netherlands can no longer cope with the reception, and that has made us take the decision to lend a helping hand."
