Kerkrade temporarily hosts asylum seekers in Rolduc sports hall

The municipality of Kerkrade will receive 80 asylum seekers from the Ter Apel reception site starting August 31. The flow-through location in Rolduc sports hall, which was put into use in July, will be made available for this purpose.

The situation in the central reception in Ter Apel is untenable. Asylum seekers arriving in the Netherlands have been unable to get proper shelter in Ter Apel for some time. Therefore, the Safety Region has asked municipalities to look for temporary accommodation. Kerkrade is making available the transit site where refugees from Ukraine have been received since July. These refugees will be housed in Horst starting August 31.

Kerkrade is offering the sports hall to help with this major social problem. "We take our responsibility in this crisis," said Alderman in charge John Roland. "Even though a sports hall with field beds is the only thing we can offer. Anything is better than letting people sleep outside without being able to wash or get food."

The site is available for emergency shelter until Oct. 1. After that, the asylum seekers must move to another site.
