Kerkrade Children's Council plays new UNICEF game on Children's Rights Day
Wednesday, November 20, was a festive and special day for Kerkrade's new Children's Council. During their very first meeting, the young children's council members played the interactive UNICEF game Expedition - Crack the Code. This meeting took place on Children's Rights Day, which made the moment extra special.
The game was developed to make children playfully aware of children's rights around the world and the important work UNICEF does to that end. Through creative assignments and challenging riddles, the children learned how they themselves can contribute to a better world for all children. At the beginning of the game, each child received a personal passport full of educational and fun assignments. With this they worked together to crack the code as real UNICEF adventurers.
Children's Mayor Jinte opened the afternoon with her very first speech. She welcomed the new children's council members, Alderman René van Drunen (youth policy) and representatives of UNICEF Parkstad and emphasized why children's rights are so important.
The Children's Council has been reconstituted since October and consists of grade 7 pupils from various elementary school in Kerkrade. This initiative of the municipality of Kerkrade and education foundation MOVARE gives children a voice in the city. About six times a year, the council members meet to discuss issues that are important to children. In addition, the municipality regularly asks for their opinions on other topics.
With this educational and festive launch, the new Children's Council shows that children's voices matter. Their enthusiasm and involvement bode well for the future!
RTV Parkstad was also present to report on this special and festive gathering. Footage from the day can be seen below.
