Royal decoration for Mr. Canna
Mr. P.J.H.M.W. (Piet) Canna (age 73) received a Royal Decoration from Mr. Leo Jongen, deputy mayor of Kerkrade, on Saturday, July 3, for his important contribution to the Royal Kerkrade Harmony Orchestra and the Police Band Limburg. He was appointed Member in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
The presentation took place at Hoeve Nieuw Ehrenstein during the annual association day of the Police Band Limburg, during which the honoring of the jubilees was also scheduled.
Since 1961, Mr. Canna has been a member of the Royal Concert Orchestra Kerkrade. As a player of his Euphonium, or tuba as is more commonly said, he has managed to achieve an exceptionally high musical level. From this quality he has contributed to countless concerts of the orchestra over the years.
In addition to his musical abilities, Mr. Canna also contributes to the association in other ways. For example, he is active in (musically) supportive activities, such as functioning as sub-conductor at rehearsals, acting as marching leader, fulfilling the function of music archivist to providing private lessons on the baritone tuba.
In addition, Mr. Canna became a musician with the Police Band Limburg in 1971. Here he has volunteered exceptionally in various fields ever since. On his 40th anniversary as a playing member, he was for that reason already put in the limelight internally through an appointment as honorary member.
This year he has been volunteering for the chapel for 50 years. First and foremost as a highly respected musician, but in addition he has fulfilled many other duties for many years. For example, Mr. Canna holds the position of music archivist and is very involved in membership recruitment. In addition, he serves as marching director and counselor.
With his involvement, he helped keep the chapel going. In 1972/1973, Superintendent Kastermans approached Mr. Canna with the request to revive the chapel and lead it musically during a bridging period that lasted until 1975. But also in 2003, during a major reorganization of the Police Department, Mr. Canna did a lot of work so that in the year 2021 the chapel is still alive and kicking.
In addition to his work with the Royal Wind Orchestra and the Police Band, Mr. Canna also served as Conductor of Youth Choir Carillon from 1993-1995.
