Monument Month 2021
September traditionally marks Monuments Month in Kerkrade and Aachen. The purpose of this annual month of activities is to raise awareness of monuments by making this special Dutch cultural heritage accessible and preserved for a wide audience.
This year, around the theme "My monument is your monument," an attractive cross-border program has been created, fitting within the corona measures.

Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021
12:00 - 5:00 p.m.: Open Day Lambert Church
The deanery church, which celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2019, can be viewed during these hours. The rood screen with the famous 1848 Müller Organ and the sacristy are accessible. Volunteers are on hand in the church to provide information. There are also 2 brochures available.

Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021
12:00 - 5:00 p.m.: Open Day Shaft Nulland
This national monument is one of the few tangible reminders of Kerkrade's rich mining past. The original elevator, a mine bicycle, coal wagons, various machines and a so-called head loader and all kinds of objects and photographs from the mining era can be admired here. A model train is present for the children.

10 a.m.-5 p.m.: Open Monument Day Baalsbruggermolen
The mill is open to the public. Discover this mill during a guided tour: grain is milled and you can enjoy mill cake and drinks on the terrace.
Admission free, Baalsbruggerweg 28, Kerkrade.
2:30 and 3:30 p.m.: Nature excursions through the Worm Valley led by Olaf Op den Kamp.
These start from the historic Baalsbruggermolen mill where you can also go for a cup of coffee and a mill cake.

10 a.m. - 1 p.m.: Open Day Rolduc Abbey
Rolduc Abbey in Kerkrade is opening its doors again. The largest monument in the Netherlands will be accessible free of charge on this day. At 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. there will be a free guided tour for which registration is required via info@bcrolduc.nl

10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: A landscape history walk through Kerkrade led by Olaf Op den Kamp.
The theme of the walk, is "Of pig herders, fish farmers and mine directors." The 7-8 km walk begins at Rolduc Abbey parking lot.

Monday, Sept. 13, 2021
3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.: Lecture on Monument Preservation by Norman Vervat
The preservation of historic buildings and areas is not a given. Norman Vervat of the national monument organization the Cuypersgenootschap will discuss the struggle for our cultural heritage during this lecture, focusing on some recent developments in Kerkrade.

16.00 -17.30: Lecture by Camille Oostwegel sr.- A monument must live!
Initiatives to keep cultural heritage alive and repurposed. How do you give a castle a new function? Camille Oostwegel Sr. began restoring and repurposing national monuments (including Erenstein Castle in Kerkrade) in 1980. He is a board member of the Limburg Monumental Heritage Foundation.

How did the Aachen elite live during the imperial period? As always, fashion determined the appearance of houses and rooms during this period. This is shown through historical photographs.

2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.: The Frankenberger Viertel - full of fantasy and decorated with figures
Guided tour by Dr. Holger. A. Dux. A walk through the streets shows how much of the past has been preserved. Smaller houses and large city palaces with gardens line the streets, and today hide various factories and workshops in the courtyards.

3 p.m. - 5 p.m.: L1mburg Doc Zoom Inn as part of Monument Month With the (adapted) theme "My monument is your house too.
With documentary filmmaker Marga Wolthuis, we look at her 2004 production' 900 years of Rolduc'. It focuses on the cultural heritage around Rolduc monastery. One of the monuments in the documentary is the Baalsbruggermolen; the only abbey mill in the Netherlands. Marga talks about her love and actions for Kerkrade and Euregional Monuments in the Worm valley/Wurm valley, which she undertakes together with others in her beloved Baalsbruggermolen.

The area around the former Kloosterrade Abbey, today's Rolduc, has a rich history. During this lecture, Olaf Op den Kamp recounts the history of the abbey and its influence on the area.
