New model Dutch identity card

Since Aug. 2, 2021, there is a new model of the Dutch identity card with some new external features.

Furthermore, fingerprints of the cardholder are incorporated into the chip and the citizen service number (BSN) is placed in a QR code on the back of the identity card.

The image below shows the external changes.

What are the changes to the new ID card model as of Aug. 2, 2021?

Additions (+):

  • blue EU flag with yellow stars and the letters NL
  • new kinegram (authenticity mark)
  • two fingerprints of the cardholder in the chip (just like the current passport)
  • citizen service number (BSN) in QR code on back cover
  • tangible birth year improved

Removed (-):

  • BSN from machine-readable strip and chip

Will my current ID card remain valid?

Yes. The current identity cards currently in circulation can continue to be used without problems. Of course, only until the expiration date of the Map.

What happens to my fingerprints?

After applying for an ID card or passport, the fingerprints remain temporarily stored in the secure travel document administration.

When the identity card or passport is collected, the fingerprints automatically disappear from these records. The fingerprints are then only on the chip of the identity card or passport in one's own possession.

What will my fingerprints be used for?

Fingerprints can be read if there is doubt whether the identity card belongs to you. For example, if a passport photo does not show sufficient resemblance.

Only authorities authorized for this purpose, such as the Royal Military Police, can read fingerprints in the chip.

Can I refuse fingerprint recordings?

No. The European Regulation requires the inclusion of fingerprints in the chip of an identity card.

What is the QR code on the back of the chip for?

Starting August 2, 2021, the Citizen Service Number (BSN) will be in a QR code on the back of the identity card. This removes the BSN from the machine-readable strip and chip. Competent authorities can read the BSN quickly, easily and error-free via the QR code.

Can I safely make a copy of my ID card now?

You will soon be able to more safely make a copy of the front of the identity card.

Do always write the purpose and date on the copy.

Or use the KopieID app.

Please note that if a copy of the back cover is to be issued, you should cross out both the QR code and the BSN in legible digits.
