New scheme for mining damage imminent

In our region, homes may have damage from past mining. Think cracks in walls or subsidence of the ground. This damage can still occur today. This is because groundwater is slowly returning to its former level. This causes the soil to move and new damage may occur.

To help homeowners with this, there will be a new mining damage scheme. Alderman René van Drunen (aftercare coal mining) calls the scheme an important step: "Many residents have waited a long time for a fair and accessible way to report mining damage. I am pleased that we were able to work on this together with the State and the region."

Where and when can you report damage?

A digital counter will open in December 2025 where damage can be reported. This counter is part of the new institute I3ML: the Institute for Environment, People and Mining. A physical location in Heerlen will also open on January 2, 2026. The opening of the counter will take place in phases, per zip code area. In this way, it remains clear and everyone can be helped properly.

The scheme is designed for private homeowners. They can apply for compensation of up to €10,000 for minor damage, or for restoration by a contractor for larger damage. The damage must plausibly result from past mining. Tenants can appeal to their landlord or housing association to have the damage repaired.

Applications are reviewed by the Limburg Chamber of the Mining Damage Commission. After advice from this committee, the minister will make a decision within six weeks. If you disagree with the decision, you can file an objection.
