New cooperation agreement strengthens approach to flooding in Kerkrade

On Wednesday, January 28, the Limburg Water Authority and the Municipality of Kerkrade took an important step in the next phase of the Water in Balance project in Eygelshoven. The cooperation agreement was signed by director Josette van Wersch and aldermen Alexander Geers (Public Space) and René van Drunen (Sustainability). This project involves collaboration to reduce the risk of flooding in and around Eygelshoven.

With the signing of this agreement, the project enters its next phase and the desired measures will be worked out in detail. Josette Van Wersch, director of the Limburg Water Authority: "With this cooperation agreement, we are laying a solid foundation for the further development of our project in Eygelshoven. Together with the municipality of Kerkrade, we are working on solutions that will make Eygelshoven more resilient to the effects of climate change. In doing so, we are combining our knowledge and responsibilities to better protect Eygelshoven."

Alderman Geers: "This collaboration with the Limburg Water Authority will enable us to target vulnerable areas and prevent flooding. In this way, we are working to create a living environment that is future-proof and pleasant for everyone in Eygelshoven."

"Flooding is not something you tackle alone. Together with the Limburg Water Authority, we are taking the next step in Eygelshoven: from plans to concrete measures — so that our neighborhoods are better able to withstand extreme rainfall and climate change," Alderman van Drunen adds in conclusion.

Plan development phase

A comprehensive package of measures has been drawn up based on hydrological research and discussions with residents. The current phase is focused on acquiring the necessary land, developing the designs, and conducting various studies. In the coming period, the plans will be further developed and coordinated with the parties involved and the surrounding area. The results of the plan development phase will form the basis for further decision-making and implementation of the project.
