New step toward modern Integral Child Center in heart of Kerkrade
The municipality of Kerkrade is working on the realization of a new Integral Children's Center (IKC) in the town center. This IKC will house childcare facilities and the elementary school De Diabolo and St. Ursula, among others, and constitutes an important investment in the future of education in Kerkrade East.
In 2023, the City Council approved a partial update to the Integral Housing Plan for primary education of which both schools are a part. Since then, the most suitable location for joint housing of both schools has been studied. One of the promising locations is the area between Main Street and Market Street. An environmental dialogue with local residents and stakeholders will start this year for this location.
Alderman Alexander Geers (Real Estate):
"We don't just want to put up a school building, but to create a place that strengthens the center of Kerkrade. An IKC at this location can give a boost to the livability and attractiveness of the town center."
Alderman Jo Schlangen (Education):
"With this new IKC, we are investing in equal opportunities for children in Kerkrade East. By bringing education, care and support under one roof, we are building a strong foundation for the future of our youth."
In addition to the site between Main Street and Mark Street, other locations are still being studied for feasibility. The college expects to present a final site selection to the City Council in February 2026.
