Opening Nico Ploumstraat and Thijs Wöltgensstraat at SUPERLOCAL Bleijerheide
On Saturday, July 10, two new streets were officially opened at SUPERLOCAL in Bleijerheide.
Because of the new layout of the area that includes housing, streets had to be added. The municipality asked residents of Bleijerheide to submit ideas for names. The street name committee considered the submissions and chose four streets based on the names that were frequently submitted: Thijs Wöltgens, Nico Ploum, Paul Meijs and Wiel Coerver. Two streets are now in use: the Thijs Wöltgensstraat and the Nico Ploumstraat. The other two streets will only come when the other planned (new construction) homes are built.
Alderman Tim Weijers (Spatial Planning/Public Space/Housing) and also chairman of the street name committee: "It was very special to be able to perform the opening in the presence of the family of Nico Ploum and Thijs Wöltgens by symbolically unveiling the street name signs. Both gentlemen have meant a lot to Kerkrade and therefore we have chosen to honor them through a street name. Thijs was mayor of Kerkrade, of course, but he was also active in national politics on behalf of the Dutch Labour Party for many years. Nico was the grand master of the Kerkrade dialect, but also a famous carnivalist. His classics such as "Hot de Honder in d'r Sjtal" and "Kirchröadsjer Maedsjer" are still connected to our Kerkrade "vasteloavend" to this day."

In the SUPERLOCAL project in Bleijerheide, as many materials as possible from former high-rise flats are being used for the construction of new housing and public space. There will be 130 new affordable rental homes, a common space for residents and neighbors, and a water cycle that collects and purifies rainwater. SUPERLOCAL is a circular building project dedicated to sustainability and resident participation. Twelve parties are working together: municipality of Kerkrade, HEEMwonen, WBL, WML, Veras, municipality of Brunssum, municipality of Landgraaf, Zuyd Hogeschool, Bouwbedrijven Jongen, Dusseldorp demolition and infra and the city region of Parkstad Limburg.
