Shelter Hammolenweg Ukrainian refugees expanded

The Hammolenweg shelter for war refugees from Ukraine has been in operation since February 2024. Because two other reception locations in Kerkrade are going to close, the reception at Hammolenweg will be expanded and extended until March 2027.

The shelter will be expanded from 71 housing units to 122 housing units. A total of over 400 people can then be accommodated. The additional housing units will be placed in the shelter's courtyard.

Two shelters to close

As of 2022, dozens of refugees were housed in Pieterstaete, a building part of the Luckerheide and in flats in Rolduckerveld. Because Pieterstaete and the flats will be demolished, these locations will expire as refugee shelters. The municipality has therefore worked with the South Limburg Safety Region to find other solutions.

Consultation with residents

Consultations have been held with local residents on Hammolen Road regarding the expansion of the shelter. There has been no nuisance in the past in the vicinity of the shelter location. Therefore, most residents have no objection to the expansion of the reception location. The refugees living at the shelter are doing well and living there is pleasant. Many have jobs in the region and their children go to school.
