Renew driver's license online through RDW

Municipality of Kerkrade participates in the pilot "Digital application for driving license" of RDW (Rijks Dienst Wegverkeer). If you meet the Requirements , you can have your driving license renewed via the RDW website. Or have a vehicle category added. You can then pick up your new driving license after only 2 working days at the City Office.

Renew online or add driver's license category?

Can you answer yes to all of the questions below? Then you can renew your license online or add a license category. 

  • Are you registered in the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP) of the municipality of Kerkrade? 
  • Want to renew your driver's license online or add an additional category? 
  • Do you have a smartphone with NFC chip (Android 4.4 or higher / iPhone 7 or higher with IOS13)
  • Do you have the DigiD app on your smartphone and do / did you do a one-time identity proof check with it? 
  • Have you lost your driver's license or has it been stolen? Then online renewal is not possible.

Do you not meet all the Requirements? Or has your driver's license been lost or stolen? Then make an appointment at the municipality.

How does it work? 

If you meet the above Requirements , you can use the RDW website to renew or extend your driver's license with an additional category. Watch the video to see how it works. Or follow the step-by-step plan below.

1. Have passport photo taken at RDW-approved photographer.

First, have a digital passport photo taken at an RDW-approved photographer and take your driver's license with you. On the RDW website, you can search for an approved photographer based on your zip code or city of residence . 

At the photographer, you put your signature. It will later be used on your new driver's license.

The photographer sends your photo and signature securely to the RDW.

Within a few minutes, you will receive an e-mail from the RDW confirming that you can apply online.

Note: The cost of taking the passport photos is not included. You charge that cost separately at the photographer's office.

2. Your online application

You click on the link in the email and log in with the DigiD app.

This way, you can arrange your online renewal or extension within minutes.

After that, you pay with iDeal.

3. Picking up your driver's license

After 2 business days, you can pick up your new driver's license at the City Office. Please bring your current driver's license with you. You must turn it in to the municipality. You will then receive your new driver's license.

Requirements

  • You live in the municipality of Kerkrade and are registered there in the Basic Registration of PersonsBRP)
  • You want to renew or expand your license with an additional category
  • You have a cell phone with Android version 4.4 or higher and NFC chip. Or an iPhone 7 or higher with IOS 13. These iPhone models are equipped with an NFC chip. 
  • You have a DigiD app on your smartphone and do / did a one-time identity proof check with it
  • You have passport photos taken at an RDW-approved photographer. Consult the RDW location guide for addresses of RDW-approved photographers in your area. 
  • Have you lost your driver's license or has it been stolen? Then online renewal is not possible.

Cost

Extending your driver's license online through the RDW costs €51.11 (rate 2024).

Note: The photographer charges a fee for a passport photo and signature. These are not included in the driver's license fee.
