Rijksoverheid forces municipalities to make significant cuts
Municipalities are in financially uncertain times. This also affects Kerkrade.
More tasks, less money
The College of Mayor and Aldermen is concerned, "Municipalities are given more and more tasks and at the same time less and less money. Our residents ultimately bear the brunt of this. This really does not seem to get through to the administrators in the cabinet and in the Lower House. Our call to The Hague is therefore: Invest in municipalities so that they can continue to invest in people and communities."
Decision-making by the council
Over the next few months, the City Council will consider possible cuts. The proposals will be discussed at a committee meeting on June 24. On July 2, the City Council will then decide on the direction it wants to take to deal with the looming deficits. This will then be translated into the 2026 budget to be adopted by the council on Nov. 12, 2025.
