Smoke detector required in every home
As of July 1, 2022, smoke detectors are mandatory not only for new homes, but also for existing construction. This new legislation means that every home in the Netherlands, on every floor where people live, must have a smoke detector.
Smoke detectors save lives
Most fire victims die from smoke inhalation. When you sleep, you don't smell anything; your nose doesn't work. Only your hearing still works. So smoke detectors are vital, and not just when you are sleeping! The sooner you detect a fire, the more time and chance you have to leave your home safely. This is why the legislature has made changes to the Building Code that make smoke detectors mandatory not only for new construction homes, but also for existing construction.
Hallmark
Smoke detectors are available in different types and price ranges. Always choose an approved smoke detector. The European quality mark EN 14604 means that the smoke detector meets the necessary quality requirements regarding product information, maintenance, durability and environmental aspects. Only smoke detectors with this seal of approval may still be sold.
We recommend that you purchase a smoke detector with a battery that has a 10-year service life. A smoke detector with a battery that lasts for several years is more expensive to purchase, but is more convenient because you do not have to keep replacing the battery. Attachment is very easy with double-sided tape or magnetic strip.
Maintenance
Keep the smoke detectors thoroughly clean. Dust and dirt can accumulate on both the outside and inside of the smoke detector, causing the sensor in the smoke detector to trigger false alarms or not work properly. Therefore, clean the smoke detector at least once a month with a vacuum cleaner.
