Together on the road: Alderman Raoul Vinken (Mobility) on shared cars in our municipality

There have been six shared cars in the municipality of Kerkrade since mid-2024. In this interview, Alderman Raoul Vinken talks more about his experience with the shared cars in Kerkrade.

Do you have any experience with the shared cars yourself?

'Yes of course! The shared cars are a valuable addition to our municipality, as are the shared bicycles that have been available in Kerkrade municipality for some time.'

Can you describe your experience with the shared cars?

'Using the Greenwheels app makes it easy to reserve and use a car. The app is very user-friendly and provides a good experience when reserving, unlocking and returning the cars. Anyone with a driver's license can easily create an account. You pay a deposit of 100 euros that you get back when you cancel your account. There are also several subscription options available. These suit different needs.'

What do you think the impact of shared cars will be in Kerkrade?

'When used frequently, they can reduce road congestion and alleviate parking pressure. When fewer parking spaces are needed, more space can be created for green spaces or other public amenities.'

What are the benefits of a shared car for residents of the municipality of Kerkrade?

'Shared cars offer several advantages. It can be a cheaper alternative to owning your own car, or owning your own second car. Residents have access to a car when needed, without the obligations that come with owning a car. There are no costs for maintenance, insurance and refueling. Furthermore, 24/7 (breakdown) assistance is included.

In addition to the benefits for residents, it also provides benefits for people outside the municipality visiting Kerkrade. In fact, shared cars are ideal for day trips. It is possible to explore the sights and surroundings at your own pace. You only need to rent a car for the period you need it. You open the app and immediately see which cars are currently available, or reserve the desired car for a later time.'
