Situation Ukraine
Last week we faced the harsh reality of a war on the border of Europe, in Ukraine. Every day we see the horrific images, we are deeply moved by people who suddenly flee for their own safety. This does not leave us in Kerkrade unmoved, either. We express our disgust at this act of aggression. Refugees are welcome in Kerkrade; the municipality is actively seeking opportunities.
As a municipality, we are grateful for the initiatives that arise in society. And we try to assist these initiatives in word and deed. We mention the initiative of Natasia Boom who, with many volunteers, is collecting supplies and is currently on her way with an entire convoy to the border with Ukraine to help people there. Through the willingness of Kerkrade citizens to provide housing, they are also offering refugees a ride to Kerkrade. The GOC* explicitly contributes to this. We express our gratitude to those who are helpful in any way to assist Ukrainians in these dark days. Are you an initiator or would you like to support a local action? As a symbolic support, the Ukrainian flag was raised today at the town hall. Together with the Orange Committee, a peace service is being prepared with which the Kerkrade community expresses its solidarity with the Ukrainian people. We hope for justice, reason and peace.
