Start of new single-family construction on corner Sun Street/Claus Street
At the corner of Zonstraat and Clausstraat, two new single-family houses will be built. Wonen Zuid and LocaBouw will start construction work this week. The two houses are located at the traffic circle on a visible location, they form the entrance to the city center and are right next to the Rolduckerveld, which is being developed.
In the building opposite - the former police station - Meander recently launched Meander in Balance. Alderman Tim Weijers (Housing) said, "The two new homes are part of our Housing Offensive, where we provide good housing in a good living environment."
Shovel in the ground
Together with local residents, Alderman Tim Weijers, Marc Schroten (director of Wonen Zuid) and Jorn Lomme (director of LocaBouw) gave the go-ahead for the construction of the two homes by means of a symbolic shovel in the ground.
Background
After a devastating fire in the summer of 2015, the property was declared uninhabitable. The then owners sold the property a to third party who took no action. To that end, the municipality took over the property in early 2020 with the intention of remediating the asbestos and demolishing the property and then finding a suitable redevelopment. A redevelopment was eventually found in cooperation with Wonen-Zuid.
