Statement Mayor Dassen following disturbances after Roda JC - VVV derby
After the Roda JC - VVV match played last night, supporters of both soccer clubs sought confrontation with each other and the police outside the soccer stadium. The ME was deployed. Four arrests were made. Two buses of VVV were pelted with stones on the Imstenraderweg in Heerlen in which windows were also broken.
Unacceptable
"We strongly disapprove of this course of events. What happened after the game is far removed from the soccer experience we stand for and is unacceptable. This has nothing, but nothing to do with soccer," said Mayor Petra Dassen-Housen. "Football should be about having fun. Aggression or violence in any form is not tolerated. Here people are deliberately put in danger. There are really no words for that. We will do everything in our power to track down and punish the perpetrators. We also call on the Roda JC community to contribute to this. Only by tracking down this group can we ultimately prevent the good guys from having to suffer under the bad guys."
