Spreading routes and ice control
Winter means that it can get slippery again on roads and sidewalks, among other things. When it becomes slippery due to frost, snow or sleet, it is the job of the municipality to ensure that at least the main roads remain passable.
Virtually all main roads, neighborhood access roads, industrial sites, bicycle paths and bus routes are categorized as primary gritting routes, These are the main and access roads (pdf, 686 KB) and the bicycle routes (pdf, 684 KB). These primary routes will be kept passable at all times. All further roads and neighborhood streets are accommodated in the so-called follow-up routes (pdf, 684 KB) These will be gritted, if necessary, only during office hours.
You will understand that the municipality cannot control all the slipperiness on roads and sidewalks. For this we can also use your help! For example, helping disabled neighbors keep their driveway, sidewalk, etc. passable.
Preventive gritting
The primary routes are gritted preventively. This means that if the weather information indicates that smoothness may develop within a few hours, the gritting of these roads with a wet-salt mixture will be started immediately.
One is then ahead of the upcoming slipperiness so that these roads, under normal circumstances, will not become slippery. Of course, it may seem strange to you if you see gritting going on when it is not slippery. However, you can assume - given the weather forecasts - that there is a real chance of slipperiness.
Curative spreading
This is gritting the roads while it is actually slippery. Indeed, should conditions be so severe that it becomes slippery despite the preventive treatment, these roads will still be gritted.
In the event of very heavy snowfall, roads will be cleared of snow as much as possible, using snow plows mounted on the gritting vehicle.
Other activities
There are also several locations such as bridges, bus stops, stairs and public buildings that are manually made passable by the municipality's own neighborhood teams during office hours. There are also salt containers at critical locations in the municipality that can be used during extreme conditions to grit the road or sidewalk on the spot. These salt containers are, of course, only for emergencies and not for private use.
