Study allowance
What is it?
If you are studying and have a disability, it can be difficult to work alongside your studies. With a study allowance from the municipality you get a helping hand. This prevents you from having to borrow more.
How does it work?
You qualify for the study allowance if you:
- Are 15 years of age or older
- is entitled to student loans or a contribution
- Has no or little equity
- cannot earn extra income alongside your studies due to a structural medical disability
Requirements Study Allowance
You must meet a number of Requirements to be awarded the study grant:
- You are structurally unable to make income alongside your studies as a direct result of an illness or disability;
- You must receive study financing under the Student Finance Act 2000 (WSF 2000) or receive an allowance under the Education Contribution and School Costs Allowance Act (WTOS);
- You must not be entitled to benefits under the Wajong.
Structural medical limitation.A medical limitation can be either physical or mental. A social limitation, for example providing informal care, does not count.A medical limitation is structural if no improvement in the medical limitation can be expected within a foreseeable time, for example within 3 years. The municipality may ask for a new medical opinion after those 3 years to determine whether your situation has changed.
No asset and income limits.There is no longer an asset limit for entitlement to Study Allowance. Nor does income in principle stand in the way of entitlement to Study Allowance.
However, it is important to indicate if you have income from employment or self-employment. This will enable the municipality to assess whether you are structurally unable to earn income alongside your studies.Students who receive study allowance and who receive income from an internship as part of their studies will retain part of their entitlement to the study allowance.
No age limit.There is no age limit for entitlement to Study Supplement. This means that minors may be entitled to Study Allowance.Payment of Study Allowance.The municipality pays the Study Allowance on a monthly basis. The payment lasts as long as you meet the Requirements . Therefore, there is no maximum time limit for awarding the Study Supplement.
